Anagram Indicators

An anagram indicator (or anagrind) tells the solver to rearrange the letters of text within the clue (eg ‘Drunken men are more despicable’ for MEANER). For each indicator, its part of speech – in the wordplay, though not necessarily in the surface reading – is shown in the list (so ‘supply’ as an anagram indicator is an adverb, meaning ‘in a pliant fashion’). Those indicators only likely to be encountered in advanced crosswords are marked as such. Note that no noun anagram indicators are listed; Ximenean thinking is that a noun alone (eg ‘fuel mixture’ for FLUE) is not sufficient and that a preposition is required (eg ‘mixture of fuel’ for FLUE, ‘team in disarray’ for MATE).
